The functionalist agenda seems to be the dominant force driving education at all levels within the "system" and in particular in K12 (my apologies for the US term). I agree that a deep understanding of the political and the "Political" dimensions of educational technology is (should be) a critical element of any applied research methodology in this dynamic field.Paul Hollinshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17436628777302814306noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5139380866860511018.post-65263192303703684362015-05-21T20:19:52.100+01:002015-05-21T20:19:52.100+01:00Comment from Frances Bell:

I am pretty sure that if I had followed the log in to Google account option all would have been well -and there's the rub!

Thanks for this amazing writing Mark. l have just read it on my phone as I am off wifi for a few days, and I will need to read it more thoroughly (several times!). I was very interested in what you said about technology not being seen as political. I felt in familiar territory with Burrell & Morgan's 2X2 grid as it helped me(in the company of others in Information Systems) to try to (partially) escape from functionalism. It was part of a journey that led to the inclusion of politics (and power and gender and ethics and...) in an Information Systems curriculum. The situation in which educators and students find themselves how with computing and information systems that impinge on learning processes having escaped organisational boundaries (not that they were ever fully confined). l think that this makes an ever stronger case for the consideration of the political in understanding the role of socio-technical systems and assemblages AND for attention to these issues to be relevant to most/all educators and students. I wondered if you had seen the recent SI of Learning Media & Technology that draws attention to the importance of language in Ed Tech.
